Beauty retail is expanding beyond traditional beauty. BeautyMatter’s analysis of 91 retail expansion moves in Q2 2026 globally found that skincare and SPF remained the largest category, accounting for nearly a third of activity, while wellness, ingestibles, intimate care, oral care, and other adjacent categories were increasingly shaping retailer assortments. Ulta Beauty, Target, Boots, and Sephora accounted for 44% of tracked expansion. Yet, each pursued a distinctly different growth strategy: Ulta Beauty doubled down on core beauty, Target expanded further into wellness, Boots built breadth across categories, and Sephora remained anchored in prestige and emerging brands.
Across the wider dataset, skincare and SPF accounted for 29 expansion events (32%), followed by wellness at 15%, haircare and scalp at 14%, and makeup at 11%. The numbers point to an industry that is not abandoning traditional beauty, but steadily widening its definition of where beauty begins and ends.
